Welcome/The Mitten Brewing

Hello there!
I am the Hop Chick. I am a 20-something living in the Chicago area (for now--let's see where the wind takes me). I love craft beer and the craft beer scene. I also love good food and great wine. Here, I will talk about my explorations and hopefully expose some amazing small breweries, wineries, and restaurants.
It took me a very long time for me to pick what brewery to feature for my very first post (since I have been to almost 100 different breweries). I finally decided to pick a brewery that stood out not only for its beer but for its ambiance and its food. Let me start by saying that I had never heard of this brewery before my boyfriend, Tim, and I signed up for a brewery bus called the Beer City Runner. This is a little bus that drives around Grand Rapids, Michigan picking up and dropping off its riders at seven different breweries, one distillery, and Hop Cat (if you haven't been here, get the crack fries. Trust me.). Beer City Runner is similar to a trolley in that it is hop-on-hop-off, making it easy to just spend as much time as you'd like at each place. The Mitten Brewing is a brewery that we may have never stopped at if it weren't for this little bus, in fact, we may never have even heard of it.

This brewery took my three favorite things in life and threw them all together in a perfect mixture; beer, pizza, and baseball. The tap handles are made of baseball bats and there is baseball memorabilia all over the walls. The beer was fantastic, they had a wide array or styles, not just IPAs, and pale ales, they even had a blackberry cider that was to die for. Any type of beer lover would feel welcome in this brewery, especially one that loves pizza (is there anyone who doesn't?).

The service was friendly, even though they were packed (there was an hour wait for a table). We lucked into spots at the bar almost immediately. We got a flight of beer, and I got a blackberry cider and we looked at the menu. As soon as we saw it, we knew we had to get it: a pizza flight. Six quarters of ten-inch pizzas, we decided on Da Meat Hook, Thai Cobb, Mac Daddy, Field of Greens, Pesto Chicken, and Curse of the Goat as our six pizza selection. The worst part was realizing that we could not finish all of the pizza in one sitting, but may I mention that the pizzas were almost just as delicious cold the next morning.

Everything that we had at The Mitten was perfect, the beer, the food, the service. This is a brewery that I will definitely go back to the next time I am in Grand Rapids, even though I had never even heard of it before I ended up there.

Til next drink,
The Hop Chick
